Bottle Shock is by writers James D. Sasserand Charles Vincent Burwell. Director Kent Nicholson, of Playwrights Horizons, helms the process. Proceeds from the gala season kickoff will go directly towards FOGG’s premiere production in October.
The evening begins at 630 p.m. with a stellar wine tasting featuring participants of the original Judgment of Paris competition including Chateau Montelena, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Freemark Abbey, as well Gustavo Wine,Avinodos, Madonna Estates and other legendary Napa wine making families from the film and musical. A three-course dinner by a famed Napa Chef Polly Lappetito will follow inspired by the wines of the story, and a concert performance featuring a sneak peek of the show begins at 8 p.m.
Based on the 2008 film of the same name which featured a star studded cast including Chris Pine, Alan Rickman, Bill Pullman, Freddie Rodriguez, the story is originally by Ross Schwartz & Lynette Pabon and Jody Savin & Randall Miller, with screenplay by Jody Savin & Randall Miller and Ross Schwartz. Inspired by the true story of the famous 1976 “Judgment of Paris,” the musical follows one of the winning Napa wineries, Chateau Montelena, and the relationship between owner Jim Barrett and his son Bo. When English sommelier Steven Spurrier shows up in Napa looking for contenders for his “friendly and impartial competition” between French and American wines to be held in Paris, Barrett is skeptical. But at the urging of his son and the community, his Chardonnay is included, history is made and the wine world is turned upside down.
Drawing on the rich musical landscape of Bay Area rock and roll in the mid 1970’s, the show is inspired by the sounds of Santana, The Doobie Brothers, The Allman Brothers, Janis Joplin, and more. Set against the backdrop of rural Napa, California, the musical also explores the passions of the local people and the magical elixir they make with their own hands that captivates the world.
